Switch Up Your ‘Wich
Out with the old, in with the new — this applies to a sandwich too!
If you eat the same thing everyday you might get bored.
When we’re bored and start looking around, our desires can take us in a less than healthy direction.
Since achieving and maintaining a healthy weight is key to reducing chronic diseases, we must guard against boredom.
Being willing to try new things keeps us from feeling “boxed-in.”
But first, a little burger story…
My family moved to a country without fast-food places when I was very young. When we made the long trip to town, “eating out” was a treat, and it was always an adventure. I will never forget the first time my mother took me to a place where hungry people flocked for the most famous burger on the block.
Customers would stand in line waiting to make and take their order. I was so excited to hear my mother ordering a hamburger for me. States-side, on rare and special occasions, she would order me a kids burger with two pickles, mustard, and catsup from a place called Burger Chef. That’s what I was envisioning.
When I finally got to unwrap my burger, I saw things on the burger I did not understand. It was definitely NOT what I had envisioned. My burger had shredded beets AND a fried egg on it! Shocked and disappointed, it was just the beginning of many “out of the box” experiences in my life.
Looking back I can say the experiences of change and the willingness to adopt these changes have been advantageous. Keeping an open mind and being willing to try new things keeps a new direction interesting and it will never be boring.
One more story…
Many years later married with children I noticed my kids devouring the mashed potatoes at a certain restaurant. Once again, I was shocked. The mashed potatoes had skins in them! If I had left skins in their mashed potatoes at home, my kids would have accused me of putting the trash in their potatoes. Mashed potatoes were supposed to be white, fluffy, and lump free. What had just happened? Professional chefs have the amazing ability to get us to try new things we would never try at home, and to our amazement they are delightful.
